Car Insurance Cancellation in Florida

Reader’s Question:

We will be moving to another state and I need to cancel my car insurance here in Florida. My coverage is about to expire anyways, so will it automatically end?

Even if your car insurance coverage in Florida is expiring, it will not automatically end so you still need to inform your insurer that you are meaning to cancel it. Otherwise, at the end of the policy term, you could owe them something and you’ll have a cancellation on your record — one that is due to non-payment. Almost all of car insurance policies state that the policyholder could drop the policy at any moment within the policy term. This is through writing a notification to the insurer that states the actual date of termination. But if you want to go with another insurer at the end of the policy period, your coverage does not necessarily mean that it’s canceled.

In case you fail to tell your car insurance provider that you want to cancel your policy at the end of the term, there are two things that you should be aware of. First is that your insurer would still send out a bill for the next coverage period. Then if they don’t get any response from you, your car insurance provider will officially drop your policy since you were not able to pay the fee when it’s due; and that would go against your credit report. For that reason, you need to properly cancel your policy and not just assume that it will be automatically canceled at the end of the policy term.
